How to Use Floating Topics in Xmind

Floating Topic in Xmind

Floating Topic lets you add detached notes and ideas anywhere on the canvas. Use floating topics to draft ideas, build flowcharts, create concept maps, or map relationships without attaching items to the main structure.

Add a floating topic in four ways: double-click blank space, right-click and choose Insert Floating Topic, use the Insert menu, or create a relationship from a selected topic to blank space. Drag to move; drop near the central topic to convert it into a main topic or drop near another floating topic to link them. To prevent auto-connection, enable Flexible folding topic and Topic overlap in the Format panel.

  • Create: double-click blank canvas, right-click Insert Floating Topic, or use the Insert menu.

  • Organize: drag to reposition; drop near the center to convert to a main topic or near another floating topic to connect them.

  • Align and style: select multiple floating topics to align or distribute, and update styles in the Format panel.

Floating topics are ideal for brainstorming and sketching flexible structures before you commit them to the map. Use them for quick notes, diagrams, character relationships, or any ideas you want to rearrange later.
