How to import a Markdown file?

Xmind supports importing Markdown (.md) files and converting them into mind maps.

How to Import a Markdown File

  1. Launch Xmind for Desktop.

  2. Click 「≡」 File Import Markdown.

  3. Select your .md file to complete the import.

Having Trouble Importing?

If you encounter issues during import, this guide will help you troubleshoot common problems.

1. “Corrupted File” Error

This typically means the file is not a valid Markdown file or the file extension is incorrect.

Please make sure the file’s extension is .md.

Right-click the file → Properties → check File type

2. No Topic Hierarchy After Import

If the imported mind map appears flat with no structure, the Markdown file may not contain proper heading syntax.

Ensure your Markdown follows the correct hierarchy:

  • # = Central Topic

  • ## = Main Topic

  • = Subtopic

Using consistent Markdown structure ensures a properly organized mind map.

3. Text Appears Garbled or Misformatted

This may be caused by incorrect text encoding in the Markdown file.

Try re-saving the file with proper encoding:

  1. Open Notepad.

  2. Paste your Markdown content.

  3. Save as .md:

1) Go to File Save As

2) Set Save as type to All Files

3) Name the file with a .md extension (e.g., example.md)

4) Click Save
