What is Xmind Skill & CLI?

Xmind Skill & CLI brings Xmind’s visual thinking capabilities to AI agents such as Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, and OpenCode. Xmind CLI lets your agent create, read, edit, and check native local .xmind files, while Xmind Skill helps it organize content, choose the right structure and theme, and highlight what matters.

Give your agent a goal and source material—from documents and webpages to images, code, or connected apps—and it can produce a structured, editable Xmind file. Xmind Skill brings Xmind’s accumulated product experience, visual design thinking, and tested mapping practices into the workflow. Instead of applying structures and themes at random, it helps your agent organize content, choose an appropriate visual structure, and use emphasis according to the task.

Ask your agent to set it up

1️⃣ Open a supported AI agent, and tell the agent:

2️⃣ When the Xmind authorization page opens, sign in and confirm access.

3️⃣ Return to the agent and ask it to verify that Xmind CLI is connected.

Set it up manually

If your agent asks you to run the setup yourself, enter these commands in a terminal:

npm install -g @xmindltd/xmind-cli
xmind setup skills
xmind auth login

The final command opens your browser so you can authorize Xmind CLI with your Xmind account.

To check the connection later, run:

xmind auth status

⚠️ Attention: Creating, reading, and editing .xmind files requires you to be signed in.

Create your first mind map

1️⃣ Give your agent the source material and a prompt that explains what the map should achieve, who will use it, and that it should be saved as a local Xmind file.

2️⃣ When the agent returns the file path and check result, open the .xmind file in Xmind to review or continue editing it.

Include these details in your prompt when they matter:

💡 Some richer map options may use Xmind credits. Your agent should tell you when credits are used. If the requested option is unavailable, Xmind CLI may create a lighter version and report the change.

Read, Edit and refine an existing mind map

1️⃣ Give the agent the name of the local .xmind file, ask it to read or summarize the map, and tell it what you want to learn from the map, such as key decisions, risks, missing information, or next actions.

💡 Tip: If the file was already open in Xmind while the agent edited it, close and reopen the file to refresh the latest version.

Xmind Skill & CLI does not generate new images as part of its local-file workflow, but it can attach suitable existing images to the map.

⚠️ Attention: A local file link points to the file’s location on your computer. It may not work after the map is moved to another computer. Use a web link when the reference needs to remain portable.
